Entry 1

 Hello, my name is Robby Bates.  I am going into my 4th year at North Central College and I took this class to gain a greater understanding of film and what is shown on screen is trying to portray.  At this moment I would have to say my favorite film is Foxcatcher.  It is based on a true story around the life of Dave and Mark Schultz, two prominent wrestlers collegiately and on the world level.  It shows how the brothers moved to Pennsylvania to join the prestigious Team Foxcatcher ran by John du Pont, a wealthy heir to a family fortune, who hosts many world class athletes on his estate to provide housing and adequate training.  The most intriguing part of this film is the way it tackles psychological problems and mental illnesses of Mark and John.

              This film follows Jeff a man who has suffered an injury from his job as a traveling photographer, always trying to get the best shot possible.  Unfortunately, Jeff winds up being hit by a car and is wheelchair bound for a number of weeks.  Bored out of his mind he begins looking through his neighbors’ window, first of which is Miss Lonelyheart, a single woman who struggles with the men and is depressed.  Next a young song writer who hosts parties, is constantly practicing his piano, and at times wooing the ladies with it.  And Miss Torso, a dancer hosting parties and gentlemen over, a drink and be merry type of woman.  Finally, the Thorwalds, a married couple that seems unhappy.  We learn that Jeff' has a girlfriend, Lisa, a young and glamours woman who works in modeling, wants him to propose and marry her.  We see his reluctance when he is...

 The Male Gaze  The male ga ze is how women are viewed in film, it focuses on the sexual aspect of the female body.  By objectifying women and looking at them as only as a sexual objects and not much more.   The male perspective often dominates the narrative, shaping how female characters are portrayed and limiting their roles. Above is scene from The Wolf of Wall Street, a film where the main characters wife is depicted as this gorgeous and almost goddess like woman who is only seen in this specific view. She eventually is able to stick up for herself to break out of an abusive and drug abusing husband. To move off the male gaze needs to change, to continue to give women power that they have that is more than just their bodies. To be able to have strong and powerful female characters that have more substance is extremely important to give women of the world power and to be seen as equals.

 Moonlight Review Moonlight is a new film that explores the ways black men are viewed at different times of their lives.  The movie starts with Chiron, our main character, as a child, title "Little."  In this chapter we see the struggles Chiron faces with his mother facing addiction, being taken under the wing of Juan, a drug dealer, and facing bullying in school.  In the second chapter titled "Chiron," we see our main character grapple with his sexuality.  He develops a relationship with his friend, Kevin and has a beautiful moment with him on the beach.  The final chapter named "Black," we see Chiron living in Atlanta working as a drug dealer and mirroring many aspects of Juan's life until Kevin calls him.  He is reminded of the unresolved feelings he has and decides to reunite with Kevin.  The film explores many social issues like black stereotypes and sexuality, battling the norm of these issues by disproving black stereotypes and embracing on...
